Automobilism in Europe has passed its zenith. However, beyond the individual lighthouse projects and car-free utopias, there is a lack of clarity as to what the city reference car should look like in the future. The classic traffic structures are still considered the planning status quo, but hybrid typologies are increasingly part of the cultural and architectural debate.

The ‘Alles Landgut’ roundabout in Vienna's district of Favoriten, a landmark of the ‘car-friendly city’, is also suitable as a symbol for future digital, spatial, and functional networking. According to UN forecasts, Vienna is the fastest-growing European urban region, and this part of the city in particular promises great potential for expansion - urban developments will be much faster here. This roundabout is already at an important traffic junction and could bring new social networks to the area as a social, green hub.

The master thesis is documenting past historic mobil concepts as well as concrete solutions for the roundabout. By arranging the building blocks over a twelve-story roadway and railway, through connecting ramps, the visitor can experience the entire mobility network in one. For drivers as well as pedestrians, an iconographically recurring building is created during the original round, generating ever-new perspectives into the green.

The design initially envisages the implementation of a reinforced concrete skeleton structure, which underlines the field of mobile evolution and its next leap in scale. On the one hand, this is intended to determine the planned use of the car parking, but on the other hand, as a 'social capacitor', it should use its skeleton structure to anticipate other subsequent uses and make them easier to be adapted.

ADAPTABLE SPACES

Since a change in mobility behavior and technological possibilities is already on the horizon, it already makes sense to question the usage of mobility structures. The grid of the new design enables the implementation of numerous functions, such as modern living and new work to make the functions more interchangeable and future driven.
