TASK
CASE STUDY UX

Visiting the hospital is a stressful experience for everyone and therefore offered great potential to create more transparency and faster administrative processes with digital means. To do this, we examined patient expectations, public regulations, and digital potentials, enabling a better experience around the topic of public hospitals.

While there has been some innovation in digitizing the patient-hospital connection in recent years, there still seemed to be great potential for improvement. The first steps to make administrative processes more efficient, less stressful, and more transparent have already been taken, and with the introduction of the electronic patient file - ePA in 2021 - important data protection issues have been clarified and new structures implemented.

INSIGHTS

In the following, we attempted to gain more insights into patients’ experiences and pain points through a series of interviews. We interviewed 5 people who were mostly female and between 28–37 years old. They had insights into the public hospital systems in Portugal, France, and Germany.

E-FILE

Since January 2021, the statutory health insurance companies have had to offer their insured persons an electronic patient record (ePA). This is what the Appointment Service and Supply Act (TSVG) says.

MVP

People requiring immediate medical care in public hospitals need a way to navigate on the hospital campus and be admitted efficiently because the current process is time-consuming, stressful, and lacks transparency.

H+ EASY ACCESS

Before arriving, one could already register for the treatment and tell the team that she has an ankle injury and therefore needs assistance at the entrance.

After submitting the admission request a QR-Code is generated which has to be shown once while starting the direct on-site — improving a transparent data flow between the patient and the hospital team. Subsequently, the hospital can plan its resources better and there is less stress on admission for both sides.

As a potential federal project, the app should available to all citizens of a region. They could register beforehand for any medical emergency and store their personal data, and insurance information as well as verify themselves. Through the push of a button, one would get direct access to the telephone emergency center, where one is given advice on medical issues.

Further, there is an overview of all hospitals in proximity as well as their occupancy of the emergency rooms. Consequently, one could opt for treatment at a hospital that is slightly further away, but which allows to receive treatment more promptly. The app also enables to quickly navigate to the emergency room building on the hospital campus.
